Cat Castration
If you intend to keep a male as a pet house cat you would be mad to do so without neutering. An un-neutered cat is prone to spraying and the smell of his urine in the litter tray will scent your whole house.
It is also irresponsible to have an un-neutered male cat that you allow out. He will father many, many litters of kittens – most of which will be unwanted and most certainly unplanned!
A castration operation involves the removal of both testicles.
Advantages of Castration
Castration will:
- Reduce the contact between cats and the spread of diseases such as FIV and FELV
- Prevent unwanted pregnancies
- Reduce straying – cats will often go long distances following the scent of a female on heat, getting lost or involved in an accident on route.
- Reduce territorial fighting and the spread of disease such as FIV and FELV
- Reduce the smell of the urine
- Ensure that male cats are less likely to spray and mark territory
Myths about castration
- The cat will get fat. If he is fed a balanced diet in the right quantity, this will be avoided.
- His personality will change. This is not true. The only difference will be that he will be more focused on you and home than on getting out and finding a mate.
The Castration
Cat castration is a quick and fairly minor procedure. An incision is made on each side of the scrotum so that each testicle is removed separately. The blood vessel and the sperm duct are tied together, making it safe to remove the testicle. The skin incision is not stitched as it heals very quickly on its own a few days later. it is often very difficult to see that any operation has been performed. Your cat will be ready to be collected after 4pm on the same day. Please phone first before coming to collect him.
Recovery
Most cats recover very quickly but when your cat arrives at home, please provide a warm, safe area for rest . If he is not 100% within 24 hours of surgery please contact us for advice.
