Nutrition

We have all heard the saying you are what you eat. Just imagine if you could eat a nutritionally balanced diet made from very good quality ingredients that is tasty with no cooking and very little effort. Well your pets can - it is called SUPER PREMIUM PET FOOD.

These foods are only sold by Veterinary outlets so that you, the customer can benefit from advice and service from a trained member of staff.

What makes a pet food a Super Premium food?

Super Premium foods are made with top quality ingredients, passed fit for human consumption. The main protein source will often be a meat protein unlike many cheaper brands. Ingredients are sourced from reliable sources. Raw ingredients are tested and quality testing is carried out during the production process as well as on the final product.

All producers of super premium food carry out ongoing research and product development.

These foods are fixed formulations, meaning they have the same ingredients every time, unlike cheaper brands that may switch from corn to wheat and back again, depending on which is cheapest each month. This allows you to relax knowing that if your pet was happy with the last bag they will be with the new one.

The super premium foods that we sell at Valley Farm Animal Hospital are:

At Valley Farm we sell all these foods with a no quibble 100% money back guarantee.
(Because we know they are great!)

All these foods have the nutrients balanced to the calories. This means that no nutrient is deficient or in excess providing the pet eats the recommended quantity of food.

The foods are formulated to be palatable but are not to be made to be over tasty, like eating mince and veggies, nice but you are not going to have seconds. Some cheaper pet food manufactures add artificial flavours to make their food like chocolate, so tasty you just can't get enough. This is great for the owner as we all want to please our pets but not so great when we are tempted to feed a bit extra each day because they love it so much and end up with an obese pet.

Life Stage Nutrition

All above manufactures provide food for the different LIFE STAGES. This is very important as pet's lives are much shorter than ours with rapid growth and ageing times. Just think Great Dane puppy to Great Dane adult, a weight increase of 40+ kilos in two years!!! Nutrients are required in varying amounts at different life stages as well as for different sizes of dog. Puppies need energy to grow and because they are more active, middle aged dogs will benefit from added dental care products in the food. Again, think Great Dane pup and now think Yorkshire Terrier pup - Great Dane bones and joints have so much more growing and developing to do and more weight to carry. Joint support in foods for large breeds and controlled amounts of calcium is essential.

Prescription Diets

Pet foods these days are not just about providing energy but about preventing disease and helping to cure or minimise disease that has occurred. “Prescription Foods” can only be sold at a Veterinary Practice under the supervision of a Veterinarian. They may be fed for a short time such as the intestinal foods during a gastritis or long term such as dermatosis foods for management of skin conditions. Some foods are very specialised like as foods developed to dissolve urinary crystals and others are more general like joint diets and dental foods.

What benefits would your pet get from eating one of these Super Premium foods?

Three of the most obvious changes people notice when they start feeing a Super Premium food are:

  • Smaller, less smelly stools: this is due to good quality ingredients being highly digestible.
  • Coat condition: shinier, skin less dry. Many inferior foods do not contain enough essential fatty acids, omega 3 etc.
  • For pets with a tendency to bowel problems like soft stools, constipation and wind these will be greatly improved.

Other benefits that are perhaps less noticeable:

  • Better learning and attention
  • Steady growth for bones and joints
  • Less dental disease
  • Reduced risk of development of urinary crystals in cats

Which all add up to a LONGER HEALTHIER LIFE and less vet bills!!

Tips for feeding a Super Premium food

Buying a bag of super Premium food may seem like a large outlay of money. But the foods are of such a high quality that less needs to be fed. The staff at Valley Farm Animal Hospital are trained to advise you and help you make the right choice. Ask one of our staff members to work out the FEEDING COST PER DAY - it will be a lot less than you think and may even be less than your present inferior brand.

The other thing you have to get used to is how much to feed. Always measure/weigh the food. It is best to get it correct the first time and then find a container that takes that exact amount such as cutting the food company's measuring cup down to size to prevent over filling or finding a cup, jug etc that takes the exact amount of food.

If the portion of your pet's new food looks lost in your pet's large old feeding bowl, buy a smaller one! This helps you psychologically - you don't feel like to are starving little Vlooi!
