The central laboratory is accessible from all four consultation rooms and features a powerful microscope (for blood smears, skin scrapes, cytology, faecal and urine exams), Centrifuges (urine and haematocrit) and an in house IDEXX lab (full blood counts, blood chemistry, electrolytes and blood gases). This allows rapid and accurate diagnoses to be made at any time of the day or night.

The pharmacy is directly opposite the laboratory area and stocks a comprehensive range of medicines and products used for the treatment of hospital and out-patients.

The hospital section is fronted by an open plan treatment area flanked by a high care ward on one side and the operating theatre on the other. These areas are adjacent to the dental suite, radiology and special procedure suites, allowing all hospital facilities to be accessed quickly and efficiently.

More specifically, the high care ward has been structured so as to allow constant surveillance and care for the patients. Special facilities include oxygen points, a full oxygen “tent”, blood pressure monitoring, blood oxygen level monitoring(SP02), ECG monitoring, ventilator, heated beds and vacuum points for chest drainage etc.

The operating theatre is purpose built and incorporates design principles used in human theatres, allowing for strict asepsis (sterility) to be maintained. Operations routinely performed in this facility include orthopedic procedures, cancer surgery, open chest surgery (thoracotomy), spay/neuter, abdominal surgery (liver/spleen/bladder/intestines/kidneys) and skin wound treatments. All patients (even spay/neuters) are monitored during anesthesia by a qualified nurse, using respiratory rate, blood pressure, pulse oximetry and heart rate as guiding parameters.

This information is central to ensuring safe anesthesia during surgery and allows procedures to be performed on patients ranging from neonates to geriatrics (the youngest patient operated on thus far was 1 hour old, and the oldest was 21 years!).

The dental suite features a custom made table allowing your pet to lie comfortably during the procedure and the veterinarian to work effectively. Due to the nature of the procedure, all pets are anaesthetized during dental cleaning and other dental work, ensuring the safety of the pet and vet! The level of anaesthesia required is relatively shallow and very safe. Any pets considered to be in their senior years are advised to undergo pre-anesthetic blood tests which provide valuable information regarding their liver/kidney and heart function. These are routinely run in our hospital laboratory, and are available to any pet requiring anesthesia. Dental prophylaxis (ultrasonic scaling and polishing of teeth) has become an important health maintenance requirement for cats and dogs considering the ripe old ages they now frequently achieve.

The special procedures room houses our ultrasound machine, endoscopic equipment (rigid and flexible), ECG and digital x-ray machine. These high tech diagnostic modalities allows Valley farm Animal Hospital to deliver an almost “one-stop” diagnostic and treatment service. We have developed strong relationships with Specialist referral practices allowing the appropriate treatment of specific diseases e.g. ophthalmic surgery and cancer radiation therapy.

The Hospital boasts separate wards for cat and dog patients, both of which are climate controlled and odor reduced using ozone machines. All wards have glass paneled doors to allow easy visualization of the patients. Our isolation ward is available for potentially infectious patients and features a negative pressure environment with external air exhaust to reduce contamination of the rest of the hospital.
