At Valley Farm we have a specially designed dental table where we can carry out all dental work. Apart from the need for a general anaesthetic, dental work on pets is very similar to the work done on humans. We use an ultra sonic dental scale, just as your dental hygienist does, to remove the scale and tartar from the teeth. The scaler works by vibrating at very high speeds, and is kept cool with a continuous stream of water. This water also helps to wash away the debris removed from the teeth.
Our dental table tilts so that all of this water, which is now full of bacteria, runs out of the mouth.

When all the cleaning work is finished, the teeth are polished with a high-speed dental polisher and special tooth paste. It is essential that this is done. The ultrasonic scaler makes microscopic scratches in the tooth enamel which, if not polished out, will be an excellent place for food and bacteria to start to build up.
The final step is to rinse the mouth with an antiseptic solution and apply dental gel around the teeth and gums.
Some patients may be sent home with a course of antibiotic tablets and/or pain killers.
