Endoscopy
Endoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure, low risk and non painful. It not only allows direct visualisation of an organ’s internal structure but also makes it possible to pass biopsy forceps down inside the scope, allowing us to take samples for analysis without surgery. It is some times possible to remove small obstructions, such as pieces of bone or other foreign objects, by passing a basket or forceps down to grab it with.
Endoscopy uses fibre optic technology and allows the doctor to visualise inside body systems such as the digestive tract and the respiratory system. At Valley Farm we have both rigid and flexible endoscopes. The flexible scope is used to evaluate the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, trachea and upper airway passages. The rigid endoscope is used for nasal passages and ear canals.
Endoscopy is usually performed under general anaesthesia and patients must be starved for the appropriate length of time. Examinations of the digestive tract will a need longer starvation time. Recovery after the procedure is quick with few or no after effects, and the pet’s stay in hospital is minimal.
