Radiology
Radiology, or x-ray as it is commonly known, is a vital tool at Valley Farm Animal Hospital. We felt that, as it is such a vital diagnostic tool, it was worth investing in a digital x-ray system. This allows for very high quality repeatable views that can be stored, accessed and viewed quickly and simply on our computer system.
We use x-ray to diagnose fractures and bone diseases. It is also very useful for lung problems and can be used to diagnose a large variety of abdominal diseases.
As these radiographs are digital, they can be sent via email to referral practices, etc.
With traditional film x-rays, it is often necessary to take multiple films to achieve the perfect exposure. Our digital system allows us to optimise an exposure after it has been taken. Repeat views are seldom needed. This allows us to produce good quality radiographs with minimal stress to the patient, minimal time, and reduced exposure to X-rays for your pet and our staff.
Myelogram
The ability to visualise the spinal cord and any defects or compressions thereof is essential in the diagnosis of spinal cord problems manifested by symptoms such as difficulty walking, or neck or back pain. We can use a special contrast x-ray called a Myelogram to do this.
A myelogram is an x-ray study in which special dye is injected into the spinal fluid surrounding the spinal cord. The spinal cord is not visible on a normal x-ray but an injection of this dye outlines the spinal cord, and makes it visible on the x-ray (see examples below). The injection of this dye into the spinal fluid may be done in the neck area (cisternal myelogram), or in the lower back area (lumbar myelogram). Just before the dye is injected, a sample of spinal fluid is collected from the patient and can be submitted to the laboratory for analysis. A myelogram is a difficult and very delicate diagnostic procedure and, ideally, should be done by a veterinary specialist or a veterinarian well versed in the procedure. General anaesthesia is required for the procedure.
